SolarAid

Award: Winner of the 2013 Ashden International Gold Award.

Where: SolarAid is a London-based international charity that provides access to solar lights. It currently works in Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia.

Aim: SolarAid’s ambitious aim is to eradicate the kerosene lamp from Africa by 2020. It has distributed over 550,000 solar lights so far.

Sport in Desford

Location: Desford is a village in the Hinckley and Bosworth district, 7 miles (11 km) west of the centre of Leicester.

Aim: The installation of a 23kWp solar PV array and other environmental measures as part of a wider refurbishment of a community sports centre.

Background: Sport in Desford (SiD) is a community-owned sports centre and charity set up to promote and provide sports facilities including bowls, tennis, football, recreational fitness and running.

Fenham Swimming Pool

Location: Fenham, Newcastle upon Tyne

Aim: Fenham Swimming Pool has installed a 53kW (76m2) flat plate solar thermal system to provide direct heating to the swimming pool.

Background: Fenham swimming facility had been closed by Newcastle council. A local charity called Fenham Swimming Project was formed and the pool was re-opened to the public.

Osprey Leisure Centre

Location: Portland, Dorset.

Aim: The installation of a 10kWp array of solar PV panels on the Osprey Leisure Centre in Portland.

Background: Osprey Leisure Centre is an ex-Navy building which was taken over by South Dorset Community Sports Trust in 2007 to provide recreation and sports facilities for the local community.

Olympic Park

Location: The Olympic Park for the London 2012 Games, which hosts many of the indoor venues and the Olympic Stadium itself.

Hadleigh Farm

Location: The mountain biking venue for the London 2012 Olympics at Hadleigh Farm is adjacent to Hadleigh Country Park, which lies within the Thames Gateway in South Essex.

Eden Solarfair

AIM: To demonstrate that renewable energy can be of financial benefit to people who cannot afford to install solar PV panels on their own roofs.

Neighbourhoods Green

AIM: To develop and coordinate a national Neighbourhoods Green partnership project which champions good quality design, management and use of social housing green space; to establish local and regional housing/green space networks supported through Neighbourhoods Green to deliver practical green space initiatives; to build a robust evidence base from which to advocate the role of green space in place making.

Heartlands

LOCATION: Pool, Cornwall

AIM: To deliver an inspiring, low carbon, sustainable community development which is accessible to all and which celebrates and enriches understanding of the local culture, heritage and natural environment.

LOCATION: Bristol

AIM: This is not a discrete initiative but a system-wide approach with a number of elements, some of which are of project status but the aim being to mainstream i.e. embed sustainable development and environmental sustainability in all council business. The case study, written up in more detail by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE), focuses especially on the Health and Social Care (HSC) directorate.
